Musical beings
Nowadays, it seems more clear than ever that music forms an important part of our lives. Music does not only unchains unconscious emotional reactions, but it is also a key element to take into account while considering educational strategies.
First of all, it is important to bear in mind that humans perceive music, harmony, and rhythm in the same way we perceive language. Our mind has developed some intrinsic devices to unconsciously process music and interpret it according to the emotions it evokes to us. What is more, research shows that listening to music enrich our cognitive skills and help us experience in a stronger way, the most humane emotions such as passion and sympathy.
Secondly, some experts have also pointed out that music should be also used for educational purposes, as it contributes to the development of different learning abilities. Furthermore, some studies indicate that using music during the lessons would benefit in a greater way those pupils with mathematical aptitudes.
Thirdly, as music is something that surrounds us on a daily basis, we should pay more attention to what the lyrics are really telling us. The younger generations spend most of their time playing the latest tunes and these many times do not contain the greatest lyrics. For that reason, we should exercise greater control on what the top hits promote in order to avoid the spread of damaging messages to the youth.
Lastly, music can be considered as old as time, so we need to give it the recognition it deserves and take advantage from the many benefits it can provide us. We need to go back to the beginning and focus on what really matters, our emotions, education, and the messages we spread.
